Staying safe on the Buzz

It’s easy to stay safe when you’re using the Buzz.

How does the Buzz stay in touch with me?

When you sign up you can choose how you want to hear from us – emails, post or text. We send you messages through the site, by email and also sometimes send things in the post if you have selected these options. These messages will keep you updated with key information, as well as giving you a heads-up about exciting activities you might want to get involved in.

Is the Buzz private?

Comments on Buzz stories are public so they can be seen by other people who use the website. The Buzz does also check all comments and questions to make sure members stick to our rules and stay safe. We will remove anything that breaks the rules, is offensive to other people or puts any of our members in danger. We will warn our members if they break the rules and ask them not to. If a member keeps breaking the rules we will remove their account.

When you send a message to the Buzz, for example through Got a Question, it is confidential. That means that whatever you tell us stays between you and the National Deaf Children’s Society (who run the Buzz website).

Very rarely, we might need to break confidentiality. That means we might have to tell someone, like your parents or carers, your school or the emergency services. This would ONLY happen if:

  • you ask us to
  • we believe your life or someone else’s life is in danger
  • you are being hurt by anybody, including someone in a position of trust who has access to other children, like a teacher or police officer
  • you tell us that you are harming another person.
  • If you tell us you or someone else is committing or has committed an illegal act/activity

We will only break confidentiality if we feel it’s an emergency, and we will try to talk to you about this first – giving you as much control as possible. This is for your safety as well as the safety of others.

Share what you think

Did you know you can add comments to all of our Ask the Buzz sections? We’d love to know what you think, so log in and let us know!

Comments don’t appear straight away because we make sure there is no inappropriate language, so you may have to wait a little bit before your comment goes live. I saw something I didn’t like – what should I do?

I saw something I didn’t like – what should I do?

If you see a comment or message from another member that is hurtful or upsetting, make sure you report it to us straight away. You can do that by sending us a message using Got a Question. Make sure to tell us what you saw that you didn’t like and where you saw it. We will then review the comment and remove it if it breaks our rules.

Who do I contact if I have a problem with the site or someone on the site?
